Use of Calorie labeling on menus in New York City fast food restaurants among college students

Objective To describe the use of Calorie labeling in New York City fast food restaurants among college students. Methods A cross‐sectional survey assessed awareness and use of Calorie labeling among 220 college students in New York City. Results The study sample was 53% female, 74% younger than 22y of age, 73% with annual household income <$50,000 and consisted a substantial ethnic diversity with 19% Non‐Hispanic white, 27% Non‐Hispanic black, 22% Asian, 28% Hispanic and 4% from other ethnic backgrounds. Roughly a third of the participants were overweight (24%) or obese (10%) and 57% consumed fast food at least once a week. Most college students (86%) were aware of the Calorie labeling in New York City fast food restaurants. About a third (32%) of the participants indicated that they use or would use the calorie information when making a purchase, 36% reported using sometimes, and 32% said they do not use the Calorie information posted.
