Plant extracts are often used as herbal remedies. While the effects these extracts have on people are understood fairly well, the explanation of what they do within the plant is unknown. The goal of this experiment is to understand the antimicrobial properties of plants commonly used as herbal remedies. The antimicrobial effects of leaf or root extracts from twenty‐four plants upon known bacterial and fungal plant pathogens and other soil bacteria were studied in an agar diffusion assay and in liquid growth culture. This work was supported by the Haines Fund for the Study of Biochemistry at Wabash College.
