The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fucoidan supplementation on antioxidant capacities in ovariectomized rats. A total of 30 female Wistar rats (six weeks) were used this study and among them, 20 rats were ovariectomized (OVX), and the rest of rats were sham‐operated. The Sham and one OVX group were fed standard diet (AIN96), and the remaining OVX groups received a fucoidan supplemented diet (fucoidan 0.05%) for 12weeks. Hepatic glutathione contents and glutathione‐peroxidase (GPx) activities were decreased by ovariectomy, however fucoidan supplementation increased the hepatic glutathione contents of OVX rats. Hepatic activities of glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST) in OVX rats were significantly increased by fucoidan supplementation. Kidney TBARS level was the lowest in focoidan supplementation group among the experimental groups. These results may indicate that fucoidan supplementation have the potential role to improve antioxidant capacities in OVX rats.
