MedStart is a Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) student‐run outreach educational program that provides East Harlem middle school students an opportunity to learn about anatomy, physiology, and medicine free‐of‐charge. The second annual 2010 program brought 57 students to MSSM for a one‐week intensive summer experience, taught by medical students with faculty participation. Activities included short didactic sessions, organ dissection, and anatomical model construction. Outcome assessments were determined by pre‐ and post‐program knowledge surveys. Results from the survey show overall performance improvement from 47% to 66% (p<.05) and improvement of knowledge of human anatomy and physiology from 30% to 60% (p<.05). These results indicate that MedStart increases students' knowledge of human anatomy, medicine, and the pathophysiology of diseases endemic to East Harlem. Positive feedback from student participants further indicates that MedStart is an effective mode to transmit health knowledge to middle school students from a low‐resource, medically underserved minority community.
