Increasing the number of scientists from underrepresented groups will help create a strong, diverse workforce. The objective of the Wright State University GRAD‐PREP program is to provide research and academic training in biomedical sciences for post‐baccalaureate members of underrepresented groups with a goal of trainee enrollment in PhD programs. In the initial year of the program, six scholars were enrolled and paired with faculty mentors in research areas that include diabetes, immunogenetics, behavioral neuroscience, aging and cellular physiology. In addition to the research focus, trainees participate in seminars, journal clubs, and enrichment courses and give presentations at regional and national meetings. Quarterly evaluations gauge program effectiveness and student progress. Mentors' surveys report all trainees attend meetings as scheduled, show motivation and interest in the program and their assigned research, and are acquiring research and critical thinking skills. Most mentors (75%) agreed that their scholars are on track for applications to graduate school. Scholar self‐assessments also suggested positive outcomes. All scholars agreed that they have high interest in the program and their research project. They agreed or strongly agreed that they were learning useful research skills and receiving good preparation for admission to graduate school. Supported by NIH 1R25 GM086257.
