Portion size trends in ready‐to‐eat cereal 1977 – 2008

In order to determine how portion size of ready‐to‐eat cereal has changed over the last 30 years, mean reported portion sizes (±SEM) of ready‐to‐eat cereal for individuals age 2 years and over were calculated and the results between 1977 and 2008 compared (p<.001). The analysis used day 1 intakes from the 1977–78 National Food Consumption Survey (NFCS) (n=9131 reports of cereal consumption), the 1994–96, 1998 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) (n=7750 reports), and the 2005–2008 What We In America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (n=5359 reports). Between NFCS and CSFII mean portion sizes of ready‐to‐eat cereal showed significant increases for all age and gender groups. Mean portion sizes then decreased significantly between CSFII and WWEIA for children age 2–11 and males age 12–59. While females age 12 and over and males age 60 and over also showed decreases, the decreases were not significant. In children age 6–11 the mean portion size increased from 35 ± 0.6 gm in NFCS to 47 ± 1 gm in CSFII and then decreased to 36 ± 1 gm in WWEIA. These differences are equivalent to about one‐third of a cup of cereal. As a food that individuals usually portion for themselves, these results show decreases in mean portion size of ready‐to‐eat cereal reported in the 2005–2008 WWEIA compared to the mean portion size reported in the 1994–96, 1998 CSFII.
