Resveratrol (Res) a natural phytoalexine has a wide range of beneficial effects including anti‐inflammatory, anti‐cancer, anti‐aging and vasoprotective effects. We examined if Res reverses the aged‐related increases in catecholamine biosynthetic enzyme levels in the adrenal medulla. Male F‐344xBN rats were assigned to young control (YC ‐ 6 mo), young Res‐treated (YR ‐ 6 mo), old control (OC ‐ 24 mo) and old Res‐treated (OR ‐ 24 mo) groups. Res (15 mg/kg) was given to YR and OR rats in drinking water for 14 days, and expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine‐β hydroxylase (DβH) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) were examined in the adrenal medulla. TH and DβH mRNA expressions were significantly higher in the adrenal medulla of OC rats compared to YC (P<0.05), but Res treatment reversed the age‐related up‐regulation of these enzymes in OR group. NPY, which is co‐released with catecholamines in the adrenal medulla and stimulates the synthesis of TH and DβH, was also up‐regulated with age and down regulated in response to Res in the OR group. This data indicates that treatment with Res can reverse age‐related changes in adrenomedullary catecholamine biosynthesis.
