Drinking water intake among adolescents: associations with sociodemographic and behavioral variables— Florida, 2007

Little is known about whether water intake is associated with sociodemographic and behavioral disparities in adolescents. This cross‐sectional study examined associations between water intake and both sociodemographic and behavioral factors among adolescents. Analyses were based on the 2007 Youth Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey using a representative sample of 4,292 students in grades 6–8 in 86 Florida public middle schools; and analyses included logistic regression. The response rate was 70%. The outcome measure was low water intake (<3 glasses/day during the past 7 days). Overall, 64% reported low water intake. Based on multivariate logistic regression analyses, the significant predictors for low water intake were frequent consumption of snack/soda while watching TV/movies (most/every time vs. none, odds ratio (OR)=2.32; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.64–3.29), no 100% juice intake (none vs. ≥ 3 times/day, OR=1.71, 95% CI:1.28–2.29), no team sports participation (none vs. ≥ 3 teams/year, OR=1.67, 95% CI:1.37–2.04), drinking soda (≤1 soda/day vs. none, OR=1.43, 95% CI:1.18–1.73), frequent fast food restaurant use (≥3 days/week vs. none, OR=1.37, 95% CI:1.05–1.79), and no milk intake (none vs. ≥ 2 glasses/day, OR=1.36, 95% CI:1.06–1.74). Targeted interventions to increase water intake in adolescents are needed based on findings from the present study.
