A new rat model, the ZDSD, has an intact leptin system while having typical metabolic syndrome biomarkers. The goal was to determine if ZDSD also suffer from cardiovascular disease typical of metabolic syndrome. ZDSD and control SD blood pressures (BP) were monitored for several weeks. Right ventricular to left ventricular plus septum weight ratios, RV/(LV+S), were measured. None of the 6 ZDSD had high systemic BP. Two ZDSD developed systemic hypotension that correlated with severe diabetes and weight loss. ZDSD RV/(LV+S) tended to be higher than SD RV/(LV+S) indicative of RV hypertrophy and pulmonary hypertension. Results suggest that the severely diabetic ZDSD were in end stage congestive heart failure (CHF) resulting from a particularly malignant form of metabolic syndrome. A younger cohort of less severely diabetic ZDSD need to be studied in order to know if systemic hypertension plays a role in development of CHF in this model of metabolic syndrome.
