Exercise training improves oxygen consumption and exercise performance in Obese Zucker rats

Exercise is an important therapy for decreasing body weight and improving health. We hypothesized that exercise training would improve oxygen consumption and exercise capacity in obese Zucker rats. Six week old lean and obese rats were divided into exercise and control groups (n=5 for each group). Rats were trained on treadmill for 30 minutes per day, 4 days/week for 4 weeks. On the 5 th day of each week oxygen consumption (VO 2 , mL/Kg/min) and endurance were measured starting at a speed of 14m/min and increasing 2 meters every 2 minutes until the rats were exhausted. There were no differences in weight between the sedentary and exercise leans or between the obese groups. VO 2 in the lean exercise group at week 1 was 40±1 at 14 m/min and 58±1 at 32 m/min. At week 4 VO 2 in the lean exercise group was 41±3 at 14 m/min and 60±6 at 32 m/min. VO 2 in the obese exercise group at week 1 was 41±1 at 14 m/min and 50±2 at 20 m/min. At week 4 VO 2 in the obese exercise group was 37±1 at 14 m/min and 54±6 at 20 m/min. VO 2 in a sedentary 10 week old lean group was 52±3 at 14 m/min and 72±1 at 30 m/min. VO 2 in a sedentary 10 week old control obese group was 39±2 at a maximum running speed of 14. Thus exercise training improves the aerobic capacity of obese Zucker rats, allowing them to work at a higher rate than their untrained counterparts.
