Categorization, annotation, and dissemination of food data pose significant challenges. As an example, a data source such as the USDA database contains fewer than 10,000 foods, while in the single year of 2006 more than 100,000 new food products were launched worldwide. Printed labels for commercially prepared foods provide some information, however there is no centralized digital resource for this information. To address these challenges, we are creating a Wikipedia‐style food ontology collection, annotation, and editing system called Foodwiki. Data from the repository will be freely available to the public and research community. By creating a distributed annotation system, Foodwiki will provide a unified and structured digital repository for a wide range of food data.
