Large instruments (expensive) are necessary for many types of investigations. Most institutions use private, foundation or federal funds to purchase these instruments. In this presentation, the federal sources for instrumentation will be discussed and the specific requirements for each grant will be outlined. National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health Shared Instrument and High End Instrument programs will be featured. The grant structure for the different grants varies, but has common elements that reviewers seek in evaluating the grant applications.
