Ocimum champechianum (OC) is a medicinal specie popularly known as “ alfa‐vaca†and widely distributed in American. This specie is often used in the folk medicine as analgesic, antipyretic, and diuretic. To date, there were no toxicological studies of the hydroalcoholic extract (HE) of OC concerning to bowel lesions. This study propose to evaluate whether there are possible bowel lesions caused by HE of leaves from OC. Ten Wistar males rats with 8 weeks of age were submitted to the administration of the dose 75mg/Kg of the HE of the OC, by gavage, five times at week, during 8 weeks. All the animals were sacrificed after twenty‐eight weeks and the bowel were observed and collected for microscopy. The incidence of AC observed in these groups was 0.66 ± 1.41 in the rectum, 11,74 ± 14.88 in the colon and 11.22 ± 6.03 in the cecum. The bowel of control group had no lesions. In conclusion, the macroscopic evaluation of the bowel revealed aberrant crypts (AC) and there were no neoplasmic lesions in the groups treated with the HE of the OC.
