This 10‐week pilot study assessed the impacts of a novel intervention for simplified diet guidance on changes in dietary intake and clinical measures in subjects with type 2 diabetes. During a 2‐week baseline period, subjects wore continuous glucose monitors for 10 days while following their normal diets. Subjects were then randomized to 8 weeks of either: 1) simplified diet guidance with energy maintenance (EM, n = 26); or 2) simplified diet guidance with a 500 kcal/d target for energy restriction (ER, n = 25), for which 45 to 60 minutes of diet guidance was provided, with 15–30 minute refreshers at days 23 and 51. Menus and food lists allowed subjects to follow example menus or create self‐developed plans. During weeks 4 and 8, subjects wore the CGM for 5‐day periods. Both groups experienced significant BW loss (ER, −1.9 ± 0.4 kg, P <0.0001; EM −1.1 ± 0.4 kg, P <0.001). Mean 24‐hour G was significantly reduced (−11.4 ± 2.8 mg/dL, P <0.0001) in the ER group, while no change was observed in the EM group (−0.3 ± 1.9 mg/dL, P =0.78). Systolic and diastolic BP were significantly reduced in both ER (−15.3 ± 8.5 mm Hg, P =0.001; −12.5 ± 9.5 mm Hg, P =0.018 respectively) and EM (−4.4 ± 1.5 mm Hg, P =0.006; −2.3 ± 1.0 mm Hg, P =0.043 respectively) groups. These results suggest that simplified diet guidance can favorably impact G, BW and BP over the short term. Funded by Kraft Foods, Inc. (Glenview, IL).
