The Interactive Textbook is a virtual learning environment that has been designed and developed to serve as a next‐generation textbook. This software integrates multiple media: video, full chapter‐length animation, illustration, simulation, and text into an interface that addresses the needs of students with a variety of learning preferences. One of the major attributes of this system is that it enables faculty to spend less class time relaying facts and more time actively engaging students in discussion of scientific theory and application. The theoretical underpinnings of this system have been tested and shown to be effective in delivering content. The Interactive Textbook is currently being assessed in a variety of university environments. The potential use of this technology in the curriculum will be discussed.
