The association between carotid plaque and cardiovascular disease risk factors in Korean patients with type 2 DM

The presence of carotid plaque is a cardiovascular disease risk factor and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease has been increasing in type 2 DM patients with carotid plaque. This study was performed to investigate the association between the presence of carotid plaque and cardiovascular disease risk factors in Korean patients with type 2 DM. The subjects were 696 Korean patients with type 2 DM. Anthropometric and hematological variables, presence of carotid plaque, carotid intima‐media thickness (IMT), and dietary intake were assessed. In male subjects, there was no difference between individuals with and without carotid plaque in hematological variables and nutrient intakes. In females, however, serum adiponectin concentration was lower (p=0.02) and carbohydrate intake was higher (p=0.05) in subjects with carotid plaque. The association between SNP 276 genotype and adiponectin concentration was not observed. In males, current smokers were more prevalent in subjects with carotid plaque than without carotid plaque (p=0.029). Carotid IMT was related to the incidence of metabolic syndrome in both genders. In conclusion, carotid plaque was related to behavioral factors such as smoking in male subjects, whereas it was related to adiponectin concentration and carbohydrate intake in female subjects.
