Cyclic and acyclic precursors are being prepared for conversion in several steps to gamma amino acid analogs, which may possess biological activity. Cyclic and acyclic aldehydes and ketones were coupled to Meldrum's acid using the Knoevenagel condensation method to yield the corresponding adducts. These will be reacted with nitromethane to form the corresponding Michael addition products, which will be reduced and decarboxylated to form gamma amino acid analogs.
