The development of effective team‐skills is an essential component in modern day medical curricula and students regularly undertake group activities for this purpose. The quality of the end result is often used as a measure of team performance however it can say little about the team‐skills employed to achieve the goal. To encourage student to take the development of team‐skills seriously these need to be formatively assessed to give the process a sense of reality Student groups were given instructions and a set of histological images. As the task was time‐constrained teamskills were assessed on time management; organisation of group; communication; data processing; decision making and communication of the answer to examiner. The examiner also awarded marks for correct knowledge. The OSBE provided a total mark which contributed to a formative assessment mark based on team‐skills and knowledge. This mark was shared equally among individuals in the group. We believe that this is a valuable and reliable tool to test group skills within a subject‐based scenario.
