To complement the coursework and research training of the graduate students in our Pharmacology department, we have instituted a Graduate Enrichment Program. The series for first year students helps incoming students make a smooth transition to graduate school and provide them with academic and social support as they progress through their first year. Topics include ethics, research rotations, coursework, networking opportunities, and qualifying examinations. The second series is open to all students in the department. The goal of this program is to hone students' academic skills and professional development. Graduate student survival skill sessions include statistical reviews, ethics workshops, manuscript writing strategies, writing an IACUC, and presentation skills. Topics within the professional development area have included manuscript review, writing a CV, developing leadership skills, choosing a post‐doc, effective networking, careers in industry, and careers at teaching‐intensive colleges. Since we are in a medical school and have limited teaching opportunities, we have also incorporated sessions on becoming an effective teacher. These have included sessions on cognitive learning styles, using technology, and facilitating discussions. The sessions are led by department faculty, as well as faculty from other local colleges.
