The Supplement Reporting (SURE) Study measured dietary supplement (DS) use using a novel inventory method consisting of five home visits over the course of a year. For 402 participants, staff counted the pills in all supplement containers in order to compute an estimate of daily nutrient intake from DS both in the short‐term (over 3 months) and across the year‐long period. Nutrient intakes were also calculated from two‐week and one‐month open‐ended recalls of DS use which the participants completed. Compared to intakes from the corresponding quarterly inventory, weighted kappa values ranged from 0.43 (for riboflavin) to 0.78 (for iron) using the two‐week recalls, and from 0.69 (for vitamin A) to 0.83 (for both vitamins C and E) using the one‐month recalls. The average kappa value across 15 nutrients was 0.63 for the two‐week period, and 0.76 for the one‐month period. When compared against the one‐year inventory values, the average kappa across nutrients was similar for the two recall periods: 0.75 for two weeks and 0.73 for one‐month. We conclude that the recalls provide an acceptable alternative to the costly inventory method when ranking intakes from DS, and that a one‐month recall is better for estimating current DS nutrient intake while both recall periods are comparable for past year of DS use.
