The incidence of type 2 diabetes is rising, and is 7 times higher than type 1 among adolescents. Use of multimedia is popular with adolescents, yet, inhibitory to regular physical activity (PA). Inactive youth are often also overweight, unfit and have poor meal planning skills. Accordingly, the objectives of this 1‐year feasibility study are to develop prototypes of video/audio podcasts and skill‐building web games with content [diet and exercise] specific for 12–15 year olds at risk of or with type 2 diabetes; and to evaluate content and mix of multimedia for appeal to these adolescents using an older teen HOT Council for participatory programming. A program joining diet and PA developed and implemented for undergraduate students based on self‐efficacy and outcome expectancy theories was merged with the content of a web program Your Guide to Diet and Diabetes and reviewed by the HOT Council. Focus groups, documents, and observations were utilized to organize content, identify authentic examples, align technology with concept complexity, and increase use by at risk preteens. Initial findings suggest that there are multiple formats, that teens have interest in and regularly access and point to the continued use of multimedia as a means of sending healthy messages.
