Healthy People 2010 (HP2010) is a comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda for the United States. This paper will identify nutrition and overweight objectives in the HP2010 initiative, define progress toward the year 2010 and identify disparities among population subgroups. The goal of HP2010 Nutrition and Overweight objectives is to promote health and reduce chronic disease associated with diet and body weight. Healthy weight and obesity among adults and overweight or obesity in children and adolescents moved away from their targets. No progress was noted for growth retardation in low‐income children. Calcium intake moved toward the targets. However, fruit, vegetable and grain consumption, and fat and sodium intake showed no or little changes. Iron deficiency among children and non‐pregnant women and anemia among low‐income pregnant women moved away from the targets. Physician office visits that included diet and nutrition counseling for medical conditions also moved away from the target. A small but significant change was noted in household food security. None of the objectives met their targets, and many objectives moved away from the targets. Persistent disparities by race/ethnicity and the increasing movement away from the targets indicate that inadequate nutrition and overweight remain an important public health concern.
