The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between puberty and obesity after adjustment for potential confounder A cross‐sectional study was conducted in 730 males and 649 girls aged 10–14 years old living in Seoul Korea. Data collection included a 3‐day food record, anthropometric measurement and a questionnaire to assess sexual maturation based on the Tanner stages. The questionnaire included sleeping time, media utilization and exercise status of subjects and socioeconomic information on the parents. The adolescents were classified as normal, underweight, overweight and obesity according to 2000 Centers for Disease Control BMI‐for‐age gender specific cutoff points. The percent of overweight/obesity(BMI¡Ã85th) was 43% in boys and 23.3% in girls. The odds ratio of overweight/obesity was 0.71(CI: 0.55 to 0.94) with genital stages, 0.54(0.31–0.94) with pubescent(genital stage¡Ã2) in boys; and 1.75(CI: 1.21 to 2.51) with breast stages, 2.68(CI: 1.34 to 5.69) with menarche development in girls after adjustment for potential confounders such as energy intake, parents obesity, family income and sleeping time. This results show that overweight/obesity associated with sexual maturation among Korean adolescents. Longitudinal study will be needed to confirm the link of causality between these variables.
