Valley Innovation Alliance (VIA) is a US Department of Labor (DOL) Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) project intended to develop new high‐technology jobs and education in a 23‐county region of north AL and south central TN. Drivers for this expansion are Redstone Arsenal base expansion and the new Hudson Alpha Institute of Biotechnology, both in Huntsville. Economic multipliers project these expansions will bring 20,000 new jobs to the VIA region. Broad‐based work and educational projects (at least 15) that add interest and depth to biotechnology in the region include: traveling biotechnology education in Biodiesel Classroom on Wheels and Science in Motion; biotechnical engineering in Project Lead the Way; cellulosic ethanol production in Field of Fuel; cakes from motor oil in Savory Science; a broad approach to biotechnology in Harvesting the Sun. VIA also enables strategic partnerships with local, regional, state and national interests. VIA is exposing thousands of students and hundreds of employers in its region to new, interesting biotechnology opportunities.
