Technological changes have caused heightened awareness of Copyright laws on university campuses. Additionally, while the legal factors of the bedrock principle of “fair‐use” still apply, newer copyright law such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for web content and the TEACH Act for digitally transmitted education provide additional scenery – both opportunities and challenges – to the legal landscape. A university legal department must provide guidance to faculty for compliance with copyright laws, without significantly comprising the academic mission of the university. In that regard, the legal departments at the Medical University of South Carolina have taken steps recently to develop additional copyright policies; to enhance faculty awareness of the latitude provided in the laws; to enhance awareness of the limitations; and to develop practical solutions for some of the challenges encountered. Electronic and live resources to aid compliance with copyright restrictions have been developed and provided, and training presentations have been well received.
