The need for well‐trained scientists has never been greater. The biotechnology sector now accounts for more than a third of the world economy. What can be done to insure an adequate workforce? The University of Arizona has received support from ASPET for Institutional Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) since 1991. This presentation will describe how our undergraduate research program has evolved over the past seventeen years and will provide information on outcomes. Suggestions will be given for those who wish to initiate similar activities with undergraduate students. This work was funded by ASPET (no grant number).
