This seminar is a descriptive and illustrative session detailing an innovative approach to teaching anatomy in the medical school curriculum. Clinical medical imaging anatomy data is an important resource for the education of medical students that has been underutilized in the basic science and clinical years of medical education. In the past, this has been due to the cumbersome and expensive nature of film based archives not being readily available to students and teaching faculty. With the advent of Picture Archiving Communication Systems, the cost of bringing these complex imaging databases into use is declining since digital archiving is exponentially less costly than film‐based archiving. Expensive workstations from the clinical imaging industry have limited the use of imaging data for teaching purposes. Recent developments in open‐source DICOM‐based imaging software on the Mac OS have made consumer grade computer systems available for medical image processing. Three‐dimensional renderings of anatomy from this workstation‐class software and virtual dissection techniques will be performed. The involvement of teaching professionals from within the diagnostic radiology community as well as the gross anatomy department is critical to the success of such a program, but the capital cost of the cross‐disciplinary approach is now so small with this particular implementation that it can be easily justified in any budget.
