The purpose of this research is the possibility of treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by saw palmetto extracted oil. This study was performed for 6 months with total 33 BPH patients aged 51 years old. Measured parameters were international prostate symptom score(IPSS), quality of life (QoL), serum prostate specific antigen(PSA), prostate volume, maximum flow rate, serum total cholesterol, HDL‐cholesterol(HDL), LDL‐cholesterol(LDL), triglyceride(TG), and blood pressure. The materials used in this study were sweet potato starch(control group) and saw palmetto extracted oil(SP group) used 320mg per day, respectively. The IPSS, and QoL measured after 3 and 6 months treatment decreased significantly in SP group as compared with pre‐experimental level, respectively(p<0.05). But the PSA measured after 3 and 6 months decreased significantly in control group as compared with pre‐experimental level, respectively(p<0.05) but those of SP group weren't changed during treatment. Urine speed in all groups increased significantly after 6 months treatment(p<0.05). All groups were kept normal criteria range during treatment for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and TG. In SP group, systolic blood pressure increased significantly after 6 months(p<0.05). Therefore, saw palmetto extracted oil supplementation is possible effectiveness of complementary for BPH patients.
