Spreads fortified with a brassicasterol‐rich phytosterol mixture from rapeseed oil lower serum total and LDL‐cholesterol concentrations in mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cholesterol (C) lowering efficacy and the impact on plasma fat soluble vitamins, carotenoids and phytosterol (PS) concentrations of a brassicasterol‐rich PS mixture from rapeseed oil. DESIGN: Double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, parallel study with a 2 wk run‐in and a 3 wk intervention period. SUBJECTS: A total of 53 mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects (37 men, 16 women) aged 21–59 yrs completed the study. INTERVENTIONS: All subjects consumed 25 g/d of a control low‐fat spread during the run‐in period, followed by 25g/d of either a control spread or a low‐fat spread enriched with 2.1 g rapeseed PS (9% brassicasterol, 36% campesterol, 46% β‐sitosterol) in their ester form. RESULTS: Serum total and LDL‐C levels were reduced by 7% (P<0.001) and 12% (P<0.0001), respectively, as compared to the control group. No significant effect was observed on HDL‐C, triglycerides, and cholesterol‐adjusted retinol, α‐tocopherol and carotenoid concentrations, except for α‐carotene which was significantly lower (−19%, P=0.046) as compared to control. Plasma concentrations of PS were modestly increased in the PS group, but returned to baseline values after a 4 wk washout. CONCLUSIONS: Brassicasterol‐rich PS mixtures from rapeseed oil have cholesterol lowering properties similar to those reported previously with PS from other sources and are therefore a suitable alternative for PS enrichment of foods.
