Bioactive compound from Thai medicinal plants reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in human lens epithelial (HLE) and prostate cell line (RWPE‐1).

Centella asiatica and Hibiscus sabdariffa are medicinal plant traditionally used to treat a verity of disease. The major phytochemicals in Centella asiatica is triterpenoid soponins whereas anthocyanidin is the major phytochemicals in Hibiscus sabdariffa . Much of literature refers to their possible beneficial implication in human health by antioxidant activity and anti‐inflammation. The hypothesis that phytochemicals from crude extracted of Centella asiatica and Hibiscus sabdariffa L prevent oxidative stress and inflammation was tested in HLE and RWPE‐1 cell lines. Each plant was extracted either hot water or organic solvent and diluted with cell culture media before pre‐treatment to HLE and RWPE‐1 and then incubated in cell culture condition. After 4h, media containing bioactive compounds from Centella asiatica and Hibiscus sabdariffa were removed then monolayers were washed and induced oxidative stress and inflammation using H 2 O 2 and LPS, respectively. Morphology of monolayer was not change under microscopic observation and also protein content was not different between treatment and control. The cellular accumulated of major bioactive compounds was investigated by HPLC. Phosphorylation of JNK and p38 and also COX‐2 were determined by electrophoresis and western blot.
