The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is the only major Federal survey that collects information on what people eat in America. This information is critical for monitoring, planning, and evaluations of domestic food assistance programs including food stamps, school meals, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). However, due to severe underreporting of program participation, estimates of diet and health outcomes for participants, nonparticipants, and their differences are biased and invalid. In response to recommendations of an expert panel of the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the National Center for Health Statistics have initiated a pilot demonstration project to assess the feasibility of linking NHANES data to administrative data from the Food Stamp and WIC Programs to more accurately determine program participation and benefits. This session will discuss project challenges and the benefits for future research of linking NHANES with the administrative data on food assistance programs.
