Radiation is widely used as therapeutic methods of various malignancies, however it may damage normal tissues. This study was performed to investigate the effects of Haedokbangamtang3(HBT3), a mixture extracted from herbal medicines, on immune and nutritional status in radiation‐induced inflammatory animal model. Either 300mg/kg/day or 1000mg/kg/day of HBT3 was orally administered for total 2 weeks from one week before irradiation. The whole pelvic cavity of female Wistar rat was irradiated with a single dose of 17.5Gy. After 10 days from irradiation, the blood was collected and various nutritional and immune indices were evaluated. The levels of total protein, albumin, and calcium of the irradiation alone group were lower than those of the normal control group. Serum triglyceride and cholesterol level were significantly high in the irradiation alone group (p<0.05). The immune makers such as IgM, IgG, WBC, lymphocyte, and eosinophil of the irradiation alone group were significantly lower than those of the normal control group (p<0.05). The levels of total protein, albumin, IgG, WBC, and lymphocyte in the irradiation group treated with 300mg/kg/day of HBT3 were higher than those in the irradiation alone group. The results of this study suggest that HBT3 may be beneficially used to recover the radiation‐induced decrement of nutritional and immune status.
