We will examine the long‐term evaluation of a science diversity program at UC Berkeley in relation to the question ‐ Shouldn't we discourage ‘less qualified’ students with lower SAT scores and high school GPAs from majoring in science? To many the answer is an obvious ‘yes.’ Why should we work with the less qualified if they are destined to fail? Isn't working with students who are less than the ‘best’ a waste of our time and money? The success of so‐called less qualified underrepresented minorities in Berkeley's Biology Scholars Program (BSP) suggests otherwise.
