Recent advances in single molecular detection and manipulation techniques allow probing dynamics of single enzyme molecules, including binding of substrates, conformational changes, and biochemical reactions. Fundamental biological processes such as transcription, translation, and replication can now be followed in real time on a single molecule basis, not only in vitro, but also in an individual living cell.
