HFB‐16 monoclonal antibody was raised against KIAA 0864 protein (KA). KA is a putative protein of a cDNA from 100 cDNA clones newly determinated human cDNA libraries and their coding potentials of large protein using in vitro transcription/translation assays. In a previous study, we reported the presence of KA expression in growing Purkinje cells and their dendrites as well as in the neuronal components of the cereberum and brain stem. Materials and methods:To elucidate the correlation between KA and neuroepithelial tumors (NETs), the present study assessed the the KA expression by NETs using immunohistochemical analyses with HFB‐16. Among the samples, 8 were glioblastomas (GBs); 4 were astrocytomas (ASs); 11 were oligodendrogliomas (OGs); 9 were medulloblastomas (MBs); 2 were olfactory neuroblastomas (OBs); 1 was a ganglioglioma (GG); 6 were central neurocytomas (CN); 1 desembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT). Results: A positve KA expression was detected in 1 of 8 GBs, in 11of 11 OGs, in 8 of 9 MBs, in 1 of 1 GG, in 6 of 6 CN, in 1 of 1 DNT, and in 1 of 2 OBs. Particularly, the cases with CN and DNT were strongly positive for KA. Conclusion: Glio‐neuronal tumors and embryonal tumors originate from immature neural progenitor cells and they were observed to display a high percentages and strong expression of KA. These results indicate that HFB‐16 monoclonal antibody is a useful marker for these tumors.
