Efficacy of weight management programs is assessed by various short and long‐term indicators, ranging from readiness to change, behavioral change to actual weight changes. College women who participated in an 8 wk weight management program of a university health clinic were evaluated to identify measurable changes resulting from the program participation. The 8 wk program focused on nutrition education promoting low‐energy dense and high fiber diets with reduction of 300kcal from the usual intake, exercise and behavior modification. Dietary 24‐h recalls was assessed by the Computer Aided Nutritional analysis program. The 57 subjects¡ ¯ mean age was 21.6¡3/4 2.3 yrs and mean BMI was 23.3¡3/4 2.2 kg/m2. Upon completion of the program, 38 (67%) subjects lost weight on an average of 1.2kg. The subjects who lost weight had improvements in dietary habits specifically with reduced intake of energy (19%), carbohydrate (25%), saturated fat (30%), cereals and grain group (25%) and meal distribution from dinner (33%) and snack (67%); and increased intake of fiber (60%), animal protein (48%), vitamins and minerals, fruits and vegetables (26%), meat and fish food group (58%). The weight‐lost group experienced decreased serum triglyceride (26%) and total cholesterol (7%). These result shows that effective nutrition education may help improve diet quality leading to successful weight management for the college women.
