Successful management of diabetes requires knowledge and monitoring of the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a diabetes education program with and without lifestyle alteration goal attainment in 533 overweight (BMI 32.3±6.5 kg/m2; mean age 61.2±10.8 y) veterans newly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Three hundred thirty‐three veterans completed an intensive 3‐day Diabetes Education and Management Outpatient Program in the year 2005 (Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System). Two hundred veterans, identified as controls, did not complete diabetes education training. Goal statements were classified into categories of diet, exercise, self‐management and other and evaluated as “met” or “not met”. Differences between change in body weight, BMI, glycosilated hemoglobin, high and low density lipoprotein, total cholesterol and triglycerides were determined with a paired t‐test. All variables examined, except for HDL, significantly improved (p<0.001) in the group with education compared to controls. Attaining 1+ goals also showed significant improvement (p<0.001) to not attaining any goals (except for HDL). Goals most likely met included self‐management (90% met) and diet (73%) compared to exercise (51%) or other (33%). These findings demonstrate the significance of setting and attaining lifestyle modification goals to improve health and quality of life.
