To prepare medical students for a standardized patient exercise: Nutrition assessment for the Overweight/Obese patient (NAOP), we integrated web‐based educational modules which introduced the collaborative care approach to interviewing the patient. This interviewing approach identifies the physician's role as that of a coach and collaborator, guiding and supporting the patient's efforts to identify and implement a sustainable solution to their health problem. Two separate multimedia, interactive, web‐based modules were developed and integrated into a Professional Skill Builder (PSB) framework. These modules contained demonstrations of the core interviewing techniques necessary to form a collaborative relationship with a patient (#1) and demonstrations of the conceptual framework for collaborative interviewing and goal‐setting (#2). All students were mandated to access and work through the interactive modules prior to the NAOP standardized patient exercise. Overall, the student's scored better on the communications skills portion of the NAOP exercise with the additional of the PSB modules. Using the combination of the PSB with the NAOP exercise, allowed the medical students the opportunity to enhance their communication skills and apply these in a chronic disease scenario.
