Team‐Based Learning (TBL) was used for learning the fundamental aspects of the central and peripheral nervous system in our Applied Anatomy course scheduled during the beginning of the first medical school semester. Two TBL sessions, each scheduled for two hours, were conducted, one on general concepts of the nervous system and one on the visceral nervous system. Prior to each session the students were given a reading assignment and specific learning objectives. At the beginning of the scheduled class period, each student took an Individual Readiness Assurance Test (IRAT) on the assigned reading material. Designated student groups were then given the same test, now referred to as the Group Readiness Assurance Test (GRAT). During the GRAT testing time, each student discussed and defended within their group their individual answers to the questions. Each group decided on the correct answers to the questions, and when all groups had completed the GRAT, each group presented to the class their answer for each question. A questionnaire regarding this learning approach was completed by each student. Students liked the learning approach because it allowed them to prepare, discuss, explain and clarify important concepts among themselves in a small group. The students found this a very interactive and beneficial learning experience. (Sponsored by a Herz Faculty Teaching Development Award, Minnesota Medical Foundation)
