The nearly transparent developing zebrafish is ideal for high‐resolution optical imaging of the formation and assembly of blood vessels. We will discuss how the zebrafish and methods such as confocal microangiography and multiphoton time‐lapse imaging have provided an unprecedented window into the spatial and temporal patterns of vascular assembly during early vertebrate development.
