At Vanderbilt basic sciences are being integrated throughout the curriculum‐‐anatomy most successfully. The 1 st yr includes full body dissection. “Just in time” teaching during the 3rd yr precedes certain clerkships: e.g., before the Ob‐Gyn rotation the anatomy of the pelvic (manual & US) exam, uterine dynamics, parturition, obstetrical anesthesia, support/prolapse of pelvic viscera, and common gynecological surgical procedures is reviewed. In a 1 mo. elective Regional Anatomy Review course during 4th yr, students are encouraged (not required) to serve as lab TAs or tutors during a portion of the 1 st year course related to their area of interest and complete a project, usually involving dissection, presented to faculty and peers. A 4‐wk “capstone” course required for all 4 th yrs. includes basic sciences in case studies tailored to selected residencies. Postgraduate anatomy experiences range from ½ day to 12 wk courses in programs such as ophthalmology, ENT, anesthesiology, and various surgical subspecialties. Each is unique, but a common format involves preparation of prosections of surgical approaches and oral presentations by the residents, with faculty as consultants, presented to and critiqued by their peers as well as supervisors, augmented by serial sections and anatomical dissections. CME workshops are similar, with participant dissection or prosected displays, typically utilizing fresh tissue.
