Hammock, Diaphragm, or Floor: Pelvic Anatomy for Healthcare Students

The pelvic region is a complex three‐dimensional conglomeration of muscles, fascias, nerves, vessels, and viscera in an osteoligamentous ring. Unfortunately, the use of dissection limits the comprehension of the pelvic region because of the donor‐cadaver’s thin, possibly atrophied muscles. Virtual reality is also limited in accurately rendering the dimensions, interactions, and relationships with essential organs, nerves, and vessels – not to mention the inconsistency of branching patterns. However, knowledge of pelvic anatomy is essential to pelvic health. The presence of incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual discomfort or dysfunction, and the use of episiotomies are just a smattering of clinical reasons for improving competence in pelvic anatomy. This portion of the Master Class will present the current evidence regarding pelvic anatomy, specifically regarding the recent imaging, histological, and structural publications.
