NIH supports efforts in the development of culturally relevant research vital to improving American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) health. In pursuit of this mission, the agency established the Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) in a division under the Office of the Director. A strategic plan for Tribal health research was implemented for the years 2019‐2023 with focus on meaningful communication and collaborations, building research capacity, workforce development and training, and creating opportunities for the next AI/AN generation of researchers. Dr. Dave Wilson, Director of THRO will introduce the office in its role in recognizing the importance of ensuring meaningful input and collaboration with Tribal Nations on NIH programs and policies NIH's. He will be joined by Dr. Maria Jamela R. Revilleza, THRO Senior Health Science Policy Analyst and together share the work of office on the portfolio analysis of Native health research, as well as the monitoring the success of the strategic plan. With COVID‐19, Dr. Wilson will describe the steps NIH has taken to address the challenges, as well as new opportunities for careers in biomedical sciences and public health research. Dr. Wilson will also provide information on some programs that support students interested in pursuing biomedical careers, and how these may help in building capacity and human infrastructure in AI/AN communities.
