The premaxillary suture joins the pre‐maxillary (i.e., incisive) and proper maxillary regions of the maxilla. This suture is important in maxillary development at early stages in life, including intrauterine and infantile growth. By adolescence, the suture becomes fused and is usually unapparent. This study aims to classify the premaxillary suture in maxillae from individuals aged five‐months intrauterine to five‐months post‐natal. Sutures were categorized based on completeness, positioning with regard to the dental arch, and branching pattern. The development of the premaxillary‐maxillary junction likely plays an important role in the pathogenesis of cleft lip. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the variations in the premaxillary sutures may elucidate the pathogenesis of cleft lip.
