The purpose of the present project is to describe a cohort‐based Department‐based leadership program at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. Leadership development programs are commonplace in the corporate world and becoming more popular in the academic sphere as institutions of higher learning continue to seek increasingly business‐like solutions to problems such as skyrocketing student debt, decreasing state support and competition for top students and faculty. Adapting the plentiful corporate leadership training models to academia is not always straightforward and even less so in the complex milieu of a medical school, which tend to have an even more bottom up structure than the main campuses with which they are affiliated. A review of the literature reveals that leadership training increases leadership behaviors and increases job performance. The various members of medical school departments have many lessons to apply from leadership training and development that can help with issues such as developing a vision, leading teams, negotiation, budgeting and difficult conversations. Our cohort‐based program was developed loosely on Wenger’s theory of communities of practice, which has the potential to increase dialogue, enhance performance and improve peer and team relationships. We developed and implemented our small, cohort‐based leadership program within the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in order to not only develop our next cadre of leaders, but also to spread and disseminate the principles of leadership and enhance the recognition by all Department members of the various leadership roles each holds.
