Beyond energy production, mitochondria are dynamic organelles that generate metabolites important for redox control, anabolic macromolecules, and organelle and cellular communication. Not surprisingly, the dysregulation of mitochondria is associated with aging and numerous diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and mitochondrial syndromes. Here, I will discuss nitrogen recycling in cancer cell proliferation. Specifically, I will discuss new ways to measure ammonia, and its fate beyond a cellular metabolic waste product.
