To further our understanding of extreme radiation resistance in the bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans, we subjected wild type E. coli (MG1655) to repeated doses of high level radiation. After 20 cycles of radiation‐induced natural selection, we obtained an isolate exhibiting 200 times greater levels of survival at 5,000 Gy. This isolate has been characterized. Growth rates in both rich and poor media are comparable to MG1655. UV resistance is only moderately improved, while resistance to mitomycin C is 10 fold greater than MG1655. The RecA gene in the radiation‐resistant isolate is identical to MG1655. Additional genomic and phenotypic changes in the isolate will be described.
