Effect of Undaria pinnatifida extract on body weight, abdominal adipose tissue weight, and fat cell size in diet‐induced obese mice

The purpose of this study was to determine anti‐obesity activities of Undaria pinnatifida extract. Obesity was induced by implementing a high‐fat diet (40 % fat by kcal) feeding to the male ICR mice. Undaria pinnatifida extract fluid (UPEX, 50 mg/day) and water as control (CONT) were given to the diet‐induced obese mice. Body weight, abdominal adipose tissue weight, and cell size of abdominal adipose tissue were measured after a 16‐week feeding period. In the end, there was notable difference in the final body weight between the UPEX (n=6) and CONT (n=6) group (39.67±2.61g and 43.11±1.99g, respectively, P <0.05). Also, abdominal adipose tissue weight had considerable variations between the UPEX and CONT group (1.86±0.43g and 3.05±0.48g, respectively, P <0.01). Furthermore, results show that UPEX increases the percentage of fat cells ranging in diameters of 0‐100 μm ( P <0.01), as well as decreases the percentage of fat cells ranging in 200‐250 μm (P<0.01) along with those larger than 300 μm ( P <0.01). Undaria pinnatifida extract reduces body weight, abdominal adipose tissue weight, and alters fat cell profile in diet‐induced obese mice which lead to the conclusion that Undaria pinnatifida extract has anti‐obesity activities.
