Our research group, in collaboration with the California Department of Education, recently developed the “Nutrition Competencies for California Children: Pre‐Kindergarten through Grade 12” (NC), which provides sequential and comprehensive standards for school‐based nutrition education. We evaluated teachers’ attitudes and barriers related to using the NC, and assessed the quality and usefulness of links to the California core curricula content standards. A survey was mailed to a random sample of California public school teachers (n=250), with a response rate of 86.8% (n=217). More than 82% of teachers agreed that the NC was well‐structured and user‐friendly, and more than 90% responded that the NC was organized sequentially. Almost all teachers (98%) agreed that the NC has value to teachers and students; 66% of teachers agreed or strongly agreed that they would use the NC to plan nutrition lessons. More than 67% agreed or strongly agreed that the NC provides useful links to California's Health Framework and the Science and Physical Education content standards. Teachers agreed or strongly agreed that the following are barriers to using the NC: the lack of time (>77%), resources (65%), and an established school nutrition policy (>60%). Overall, teachers perceived the NC document as useful and informative. This project was funded in part by the California Department of Education.
