LIPID PROFILE IN A GROUP OF SHOOLCHILDREN AT SOCIAL RISK

Clinical and epidemiologic studies established a relationship between an abnormal plasma lipoprotein status and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The consequences of bad habits on life‐style, particularly eating and sedentary patterns, cause prevalent health problems in the child population. We analyzed lipid profile in 165 children attending educational centers (Great Bs. As) between 10 and 13 years of age, from a low socioeconomic class. Serum cholesterol (CT), HDL and Triglycerides (TG) were determined by enzymatic‐colorimetric methods and LDL was calculated from the equation of Friedewald : LDL = CT‐ (TG/5 + HDL). The reference values were taken from the American Heart Association guides. Results (mg/dL) expressed as X±S.D were: CT : 164.6±26.7; HDL : 45.5± 11.0; LDL :103.8± 24.4; TG :76.5±37.6. The 10 % of children presents CT >200mg/dL, 16.4% HDL < 35, and 11.5% LDL > 130. Only 3% of children presents TG > 150. These data show some alterations in the lipid profile; these findings indicate that these children would suffer changes in serum lipids in the second and third decade of life, that would lead to a high risk of future coronary disease. These results emphasize the necessity to promote nutritional education and to increase physical activity. Supported by UBA (O701)
